KEEN is on a mission to save kids, and we need your help. We are participating in Extra Life for the 4th year in a row! Extra Life is a gamer-based fundraiser that started in 2008 to support the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
Extra Life is a huge worldwide celebration of the social impact of gamers of all kinds, from video games to board games and tabletop RPG’s!
We hope that you’ll find it in your heart to support our efforts with a donation that will go directly to the Stollery.

What do you do at KEEN?
I’m the Web Director.
What’s your gamer experience?
Donkey and Q*Bert on Colecovision started my fascination with video games that has lasted throughout the years. In what other entertainment medium can you be the main character, determine what he/she does and ultimately affect the end story? Also, shooting and blowing up stuff is pretty cool too!
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
I can’t think of anything more fun than spending 24 hours playing video games for charity.

What do you do at KEEN?
I’m the Creative Director.
What’s your gamer experience?
I love playing games, started when I was young, I was totally a Nintendo kid. Then a game called Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time came along and blew my mind with how awesome it was and I played it every waking minute I could until it was finished.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
Being a mom and actually having to use the Stollery facility myself I’ve seen firsthand how fantastic they are there. This is a fun way to give back.

What do you do at KEEN?
I’m the Founder, and I guess big kahuna here. So that means, I empty the dishwasher, and take out the trash.
What’s your gamer experience?
Aside from Mario Brothers or Super Spike VBall, my experience is super weak!
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
If this helps to create some good in the world, I’m all in.

Visual Production Manager / Photographer.
What’s your gamer experience?
Been pwning n00bz since Commodore 64 yo.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
I have been told children are our future, so we should make sure they’re around for the future.

An unmotivated beginner
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
This will be my third time participating in Extra Life because it is such a great cause. The Stollery Children’s Hospital is amazing and we are so lucky to have access to it in our community. The Stollery has helped my daughter considerably and I will always be grateful. Glad to have the opportunity to give back 🙂
Favourite in-game Power UP?
The red turtle shells in Mario Kart.

What do you do at KEEN?
Accounts & Marketing Director.
What’s your gamer experience?
Limited.
I can crush Donkey Kong on Nintendo 64 but beyond that I stick to board games or puzzles. I do like Mario Kart racing but will leave the pro gaming to my husband and fellow KEENers.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
We are super lucky to have the Stollery here in Edmonton and I am always game to support an organization I care about. Also, hanging our with the KEEN crew, all day snacks, music and games – What’s not to love!!
Favourite in-game Power UP?
Star Power or Mario’s Tanooki Suit.
DAVID “SteviaDaddy” DUARTE
What do you do at KEEN?
I am the Art Director here at KEEN.
What’s your gamer experience?
I started my gaming adventure when my dad got me a used Atari 2600 for Christmas…it was love at the first sight. Then I continued to grow my passion for video games with Family and Nintendo and finally, Play Station has been my loyal e-buddy to date.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
I have never been part of any experience like this in the past, so anything that brings joy to the world and playing 24-hours of video games with incredible people. How could I say no to that?
Favourite in-game Power UP?
The Call of Duty chopper.
ALEXA “2cool4School” PRINS
What do you do at KEEN?
I’m a Digital Marketing Coordinator at KEEN.
What’s your gamer experience?
I love games with long stories, beautiful graphics and/or cute characters. Harvest Moon, Little Big Planet, Animal Crossing, Zelda Windwaker, Kirby’s Epic Yarn & any Mario games were always my favourites.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
I’m always down to play some games with my friends & if it’s for a good cause, even better! It’s also good fun to see people unleash their competitive side.
Favourite in-game Power UP?
Festival Kirby. It allows Kirby and his pals to perform a dance that obliterates all enemies on screen.
LEO “LargeSkull” BROADHEAD
What do you do at KEEN?
Ultra Graphic Designer III
What’s your gamer experience?
Extensive. In my youth I was drafted to compete competitively against the kids in my neighbourhood. But after a number of injuries, broken cartridges, and failed rebuilds, I decided to hang up the cords and entered into an early retirement. Since then I’ve participated casually in unofficial local tournaments and captained a few beer leagues.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
I have fond memories of pulling all-nighters with the gang crowded around the dull glow of the ‘Tube.’ Just 24 hours of good ol’ button mashin’, pop swillin’, and cheat code enterin’. I suppose all of that late-night training has lead me to this very moment. And I’m ready to return from retirement to fight the overnight fight once more!

Big head mode!
ARDEN “Taco’BoutAwesome” BURNETT
What do you do at KEEN?
Graphic Designer.
What’s your gamer experience?
Not a lot…I enjoy Mario games! I have fond memories playing Mario 64 as that was the first game I ever owned.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
Powerful things can happen when a group of people are focused on one goal. Let’s save sick kids!
Favourite in-game Power UP?
Mario Mushroom for sure!!! I identify with short people problems.
BRYAN “IN2DEEP” LY
What do you do at KEEN?
Solve problems one keystroke at a time.
What’s your gamer experience?
“You merely adopted the [games]; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!” – So basically, yes I play games.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
Think of the children!
Favourite in-game Power UP?
Link’s boomerang in Zelda. Or the ability to summon giant behemoths in Final Fantasy.
BREANNE “ToadallyTubular” BECKIE
What do you do at KEEN?
Graphic Designer.
What’s your gamer experience?
Pretty minimal, except for Mario Kart, Mario Party and an occasional button mashing match on Super Mario Bros.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
Because why not? It’s a fun way to give back to an amazing cause and a great organization!

Star Power in Mario Kart.

What do you do at KEEN?
I’m an Account Coordinator.
What’s your gamer experience?
Little to none, unless you count hours of watching others play Amenia as experience. I do, however, love board games and could spend hours over a game of Catan.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
The Stollery is an incredible organization that does fantastic work helping kids, and I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to do my little part in helping the cause. Besides, what’s a better way to spend a day than by playing games and hanging with the KEEN gang?

Pac Man’s Power Pellets.
FRANCES “GoHardOrGoHome” CONNOLLY
What do you do at KEEN?
Account Coordinator.
What’s your gamer experience?
I grew up playing Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt on my grandma’s original Nintendo Entertainment System from the 80’s. I also spent a fair share of my childhood playing Club Penguin and Webkinz. To this day I will never pass up an opportunity to participate in a Mario Kart tournament.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
I love that it is for a good cause, and we get to play games all day so in my mind it’s a win-win. Also since I am new to the KEEN team I thought what better way to get to know my new coworkers than spending 24 straight hours with them??

What’s your gamer experience?
I played a lot of Super Smash Bros & Mario Kart and also watched my brother play a lot of his games when I was younger. I don’t play so much now, but when I do, it’s a lot of puzzle games like Fez, Tale of Two Sons, Flow, etc.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
I’ve participated in the past and it was a blast! It’ll be great to bond with my co-workers and scope out new games that I may not have heard or tried before. Plus, it’s all for a good cause!
Favourite in-game Power UP?
Invisibility.
KARI “KGBibo” GREEN
What’s your gamer experience?
Super Nintendo was my jam! Lion King, Aladdin, Donkey Kong. The good old days when bad guys just moved across the screen at you. After that my gaming has become more and more of a button mash frenzy.
Why did you want to participate in Extra Life?
Play games with friends for 24 hours and shirk responsibilities and it’s all for a good cause? That’s always going to be a yes for me 🙂
